During the 17th century Europe, there was very little religious freedom in England. The king was head of both the Church and the nation; therefore, any subject of the king who did not follow the Church of England’s beliefs and practices were punished and deprived of full citizen rights. Many people in England sought freedom to worship and emigrated to America.
