The Fear of popery in England rang throughout the colonies of America. King James II declared that he wanted England to run on Catholic doctrine, but the policies of King James II had caused much discontent in both Whig and Tories parties. As a result, an ‘Invitation’ to William of Orange inviting the Protestant William to take the throne of the country – along with his wife Mary who was the daughter of James II and granddaughter of Charles I. Thus began the 1688 Revolution in England.
The establishment of the English Bill of Rights was due to the repeated abuses of power by King James II during his reign from 1685 to 1689. He was known to have suspended acts of Parliament, and collecting unauthorized taxes. Furthermore, he attempted to impose Catholicism on a Protestant nation by persecuting Protestant dissenters.
In November of 1688 William of Orange and his wife Mary, daughter of James II, invaded England with the popular support of the English people (Protestant). He brought with him a large army comprised primarily of Dutch mercenaries, but James ultimately fled for France.
