Catholics remained prominent in both North and South parts of the United States due to the fact that they were usually either Southern slave owners or proprietor of Northern manufacturing companies who mainly viewed slavery as being quite an unfair labor advantage. A lot of Irish Catholics in the North agreed to fight in the war to preserve the Union, but many German Catholics in Pennsylvania agreed to fight because they opposed slavery.
